Baobab vs. oranges: the vitamin C comparison

How much vitamin C is in baobab fruit powder compared with an orange — with real numbers and honest caveats.

Baobab is often described as “higher in vitamin C than oranges”. Here's what the numbers say.

The numbers

  • Baobab fruit pulp: published analyses report a wide range, often a few hundred milligrams of vitamin C per 100 g. It varies with the tree, region and storage.
  • Raw orange: about 53 mg of vitamin C per 100 g (USDA).

What that means in real life

Gram for gram, dried baobab pulp usually contains more vitamin C than fresh orange. That's partly because baobab is dry, while an orange is mostly water.

But you eat a whole orange (about 130 g) and only a teaspoon or two of baobab. So think of baobab as a handy way to add vitamin C and fibre to your food, not a replacement for fruit.

Why vitamin C matters

Vitamin C is a factor in the maintenance of good health, and it helps your body absorb iron from plant foods. That makes baobab a good partner for moringa, which contains iron.

Bonus: fibre

Baobab pulp is also rich in dietary fibre, which an orange's juice doesn't give you.
